Our History
For more than a half a century, the CHRO Association has been at the forefront of the most consequential HR public policy and practice issues. Founded in 1968 as the Labor Policy Association (LPA), we evolved into the HR Policy Association (HRPA) in the early 2000s and now the CHRO Association in 2025. Each evolution reflects the issues and skill-building required to manage the workforces of large multinational organizations committed to growth.
Timeline
- Early years: The organization quickly established itself as a highly respected public policy advocacy leader in pressing labor relations issues as diverse as pay, discrimination, layoffs, drug testing and occupational safety and health.
- 1990’s: Reflecting member company shifts to employee involvement and empowerment, the association consistently focused on clarifying and strengthening members’ strategic ability to compete and grow. Key issues included overtime and wages, affirmative action, and the important topic of employer liability.
- 2000’s: Our focus expanded, addressing public, investor, policymaker and regulatory scrutiny of executive compensation and healthcare. The establishment of the Center on Executive Compensation (COEC) launched an important evolution to providing HR practice insights and training that assures all parties can operate with maximum clarity, avoid unintended consequences and leverage best practices to ensure their success.
- Early 2000’s: While policy is jurisdictional, our member organizations are global, and so we expanded to meet global company needs. By integrating the EU-based Brussel European Employee Relations Group (BEERG), we provide unique regional HR leadership networks across Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific that provides regional HR leaders with peer exchange, insights and best practices in global HR management.
- Today: The CHRO Association is unmatched in its value to senior HR leaders whose remit has expanded as modernized workforce strategies have become inextricably linked to valuation and growth. Through Expertise, Community and Advocacy, members confront transformative organization issues from AI to organizational design, CEO Succession, DEI and many more. For top CHROs and their teams, this is where HR leaders exchange ideas and best practices with subject matter experts as an unparalleled network of HR’s leading practitioners.

"The CHRO Association is the single most valuable asset to both my executive role and my personal growth."
The CHRO Center on Executive Compensation is an invaluable partner to me and my team, and by extension to our CEO and Board. They provide relevant insights, in a timely manner. The team at the Center is deeply knowledgeable and we regularly seek and follow their counsel.
