The National Academies of Sciences (NAS) panel that will review and evaluate the quality of the employer compensation data collected by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in 2019 includes members with research, union and economic inequality experience, but none with any practical experience in how useful the data is in assessing employers' progress towards pay equity.
The NAS panel will examine the quality of the pay data the EEOC collected, the utility of pay bands in measuring pay disparities, and other uses of the data. A final report will provide conclusions and recommendations to the EEOC that the commission will use to determine if it will collect pay data in the future.
Researchers, unions, and academics dominate the panel. Eight members of the 13-member panel are academic researchers, four have union or advocacy group backgrounds, and one is a survey specialist.
No employer perspective: No one on the panel has direct experience with HRIS systems, how employers conduct compensation analyses or how useful the data may be for identifying pay discrimination.
Outlook: The NAS panel will provide a final report to the EEOC with conclusions and recommendations to assist the EEOC in assessing the utility of the compensation data collected and in refining its approach for subsequent data collections.
